In the previous post, I mentioned a bog of solipsism and I think I'd like to talk a bit more about that.
The internet is obviously some sort of ever expanding virtual landscape that moves exponentially faster than we do... it helps us to connect and disconnect... to plug-in and unplug simultaneously. (God, I love ellipses).
Now, more than ever before, I sense a certain pulling away... a new type of solitude. For me it's a voyeuristic fascination with the online narrative- it's a narrative that is by no means truthful or rooted in reality. It's the narrative of our virtual lives. I'm not suggesting some sort of Tron phenomenon, certainly not. It's more of a visual/textual experiencing of each other. I can see you and hear you but that's about it... There isn't much choice for us to touch or feel. Rarely does anything I read or see (vis-a-vis a video or image) on Facebook or Twitter or in the blogisphere, rarely am I moved emotionally. And never physically. It's only an optical sensation... (text is, after all, exceptionally visual). There is no real violence in social networking... no flesh to flesh contact. Occasionally physical connections are facilitated on the internet (see Facebook, Lavalife, plentyoffish, etc.). And my friends no longer seem like friends. My enemies either. It is a dangerous time for lonely people. I've fallen in love with one of these lifelike cyber narratives once. I've yet to forgive myself... I broke my own heart. It was a time before I learned that there is no place for heart within a virtual and electronic world.
